About Our Paint Correction & Polish

Paint correction in Rapid City costs $595 to $1,800 depending on vehicle size and the number of correction stages required. A single-stage refresh on a newer sedan runs $595 to $895. A two-stage correction on a 5 to 10-year-old daily driver runs $895 to $1,400. A full three-stage correction on a heavily-marred or older vehicle runs $1,400 to $1,800. Every correction job is the required prep step before any multi-year ceramic coating, and it is the only way to truly restore depth and gloss to clear-coat that has been buried under years of wash damage.

Paint correction is not polish in a bottle. It is a controlled abrasive process that removes a microscopic layer of clear-coat (typically 0.1 to 0.5 microns) to level out the swirls, holograms, oxidation, and hazing that have accumulated over the life of the paint. Each stage uses progressively finer compounds and pads, and the final pass leaves a true mirror finish. Done right, a 10-year-old Rapid City daily driver can come out looking better than the day it was delivered.

The process starts with a paint-depth gauge reading to confirm the clear-coat has enough thickness to safely correct. We then test polish on a small panel to dial in the right compound and pad combination for the specific paint hardness. Multi-stage correction proceeds with a heavy cut on stage one to remove the deeper marks, a polishing stage to refine the haze left by the cut, and a final finishing stage to leave the surface in true mirror condition. An IPA panel wipe between every stage strips polishing oils so we are reading the real paint, not the cosmetic shine.

Why most Black Hills daily drivers need it: six months of winter washing, automatic brush wash subscriptions, drying with the wrong towel, and the prairie dust storms that scour the panels on the drive in from Wall or Box Elder all add swirls year over year. By year five, the paint looks dull even when clean. Paint correction is the reset that brings it back, and pairing it with a multi-year ceramic coating is the way to keep it that way.

Our Correction Install Process

  1. 1

    Paint Depth Reading

We measure clear-coat thickness with an electronic gauge to confirm the paint can be safely corrected and how many stages it can support.

  2. 2

    Test Panel Polish

Small test polish to dial in compound and pad combination for the specific paint hardness on your vehicle.

  3. 3

    Cutting Stage

Heavy-cut compound removes deeper swirls, holograms, and oxidation. This is the work that resets the surface.

  4. 4

    Polish + Finish

Progressively finer compounds and pads refine the haze from the cut and leave the surface in true mirror condition.

  5. 5

    IPA Wipe + Inspection

Final isopropyl panel wipe strips polishing oils. Inspection under shop and natural light. Coating-ready surface.

Paint Correction & Polish Questions

  • How much does paint correction cost in Rapid City?

Single-stage correction on a newer vehicle runs $595 to $895. Two-stage on a 5 to 10-year-old daily driver runs $895 to $1,400. Three-stage on a heavily-marred or older vehicle runs $1,400 to $1,800. Vehicle size and paint hardness shift the price within those ranges. Free written quote within the same business day.

  • How long does paint correction take?

A single-stage runs 6 to 10 hours. A two-stage runs 12 to 18 hours, typically split across 2 days. A full three-stage runs 18 to 30 hours, typically 3 days. We schedule one correction job per bay at a time so we are not cutting corners. Most customers drop the vehicle for the duration and pick up at completion.

  • Will paint correction remove all scratches?

It removes anything that is in the clear-coat: swirls, holograms, oxidation, light scratches, water spots, and hazing. Scratches that have cut through the clear-coat into the basecoat (you can catch them with a fingernail typically) cannot be polished out. We inspect and tell you honestly what will lift and what will require touch-up or repaint.

  • Do I need paint correction before a ceramic coating?

Almost always yes. A ceramic coating locks in whatever is on the paint at the time of application. Skipping correction means swirls and oxidation are sealed under the coating for the next 2 to 9 years. We do a single-stage correction at minimum on every coating prep, and the cost is typically included in the ceramic package.

  • Is paint correction safe for the clear-coat?

Yes when done right with paint-depth measurement. We remove only 0.1 to 0.5 microns of clear-coat per correction, and factory clear-coat is typically 35 to 50 microns thick. A vehicle can be safely corrected 3 to 6 times in its life. We measure before we cut and stop if the clear-coat is thin.

  • Can correction restore a 15-year-old vehicle?

Often yes, dramatically. Older Black Hills vehicles tend to have heavy swirl marks from decades of winter washing and dust scour, but as long as the clear-coat has not failed (peeling, cracking) the gloss can usually be brought back. We inspect first. If the clear-coat has failed, correction will not fix it and we will tell you up front.
